The Metropole Cluster

Comparative Literature offers students a cluster on The Metropole, which focuses on how literature depicts urban life. Courses in the Metropole cluster focus on questions of cultural productivity, anonymity, violence, the diversity of the population, major world capitals, the beauty found in the city, and other topics.

To complete the cluster, students take three of the following courses, or propose another Comparative Literature course in which they devote significant attention to the Metropole:

CL 115: Freshman Seminar: The City
CL 260: Cityscapes
CL 306: Modern Jewish Writers
CL 4901: Capital Lives
CL 495: The 19th-Century European Novel
